From blank page to launch — building the brand, website, and ongoing design support for a new preschool that needed to stand on its own while staying connected to a beloved parent school

Project Overview

The Nest at Wheeler is an early childhood education program operated by The Wheeler School, an independent school based in Seekonk, Massachusetts. The Nest offers nature-based Nursery and Pre-K programs for children ages 2 years 9 months to 5 years old, grounding early learning in joyful, hands-on experiences in the natural world.

When the Wheeler School decided to launch The Nest as a distinct program in 2020, they needed a brand and digital presence that could attract young families while making clear the program was part of the Wheeler family. That meant a “brand-adjacent” approach: its own identity, its own website, but clearly connected to the school’s trusted reputation. They came to Pixel Parlor (now operating as Wild & Wander for camp and auxiliary program clients) to build that from scratch.

The Challenge

The Wheeler School had built decades of trust with families. The Nest was new. It needed to feel welcoming, playful, and professional enough to earn families’ confidence on its own merits — but distinct from the main school’s more formal brand. Too different, and it would seem disconnected. Too similar, and it would look like a subdomain, not a program with its own identity.

The digital component was equally important. Families looking for early childhood programs do a lot of research online, and the site needed to make finding key information — schedule options, philosophy, how to apply — effortless. Registration and inquiry flows especially needed to be simple, because a frustrated parent closes the tab.

The Goal: Create a cohesive brand identity and user-friendly website that establishes The Nest as a confident, welcoming presence in its own right — while honoring its home in the Wheeler family.

Our Approach

We started with the branding problem, because everything else flows from it. The logo needed warmth and playfulness without being precious — it had to feel like somewhere you would actually want to send your kid, not a corporate childcare chain. We built out brand guidelines alongside the logo so that any future materials, whether digital or print, would stay consistent even as the team evolved.

For the website, we began with sitemap and wireframe work before a single visual decision was made. The goal was to pressure-test the information architecture: could a parent land on the homepage and understand what The Nest is within 10 seconds? Could they get from “interested” to “I know how to apply” without clicking through three submenus? Once the structure was solid, we moved into design and development — building on our custom WordPress camp theme, which meant a faster build, a lower cost, and a foundation the team could manage themselves post-launch.

Print collateral came next, carrying the new brand into physical materials for outreach and enrollment.

What We Built

Brand Identity
A custom logo and brand guidelines — playful but grounded, adjacent to the Wheeler School’s visual language but distinctly The Nest’s own. Color palette, typography, and usage rules documented for consistency across all future collateral.

The Website
A WordPress site built on the Wild & Wander proprietary camp theme, optimized for mobile navigation, program exploration, and seamless registration. The site presents Nursery and Pre-K programs clearly, surfaces schedule and tuition information quickly, and reflects the warm, nature-infused spirit of the program.

Print Collateral
Outreach and promotional materials built on the new brand system — designed to reach families through direct mail and community partnerships.

Ongoing Support
Post-launch maintenance, content updates, and on-call design support. Seasonal needs, new collateral, website questions — the team has a partner to reach out to.

“We have worked with the Wild & Wander team on numerous projects, including for our Summer Camp and new Early Childhood Center. The team exceeded our expectations in terms of brand design, website development, and the overall finished project. We love that we are able to turn to them for assistance at any time, with any requests — whether it be website updates, collateral materials, or just general questions. We highly recommend Wild & Wander!”

The Impact

The Nest at Wheeler launched with a brand and website that immediately communicated credibility. The site’s structure — built around the questions families actually ask — helped the program stand up quickly as an independently searchable presence connected to The Wheeler School.

A purpose-built campus building designed by designLAB architects opened in September 2025, welcoming the first cohort of students into a facility that physically reinforces the same nature-based philosophy the brand communicates online. The brand and the space now tell the same story.

The ongoing maintenance relationship means the team isn’t left managing a complex site alone — a common pain point for small programs with limited staff. They can keep their focus on the kids.
